Transitional Kindergarten – “The Gift of Time”

St. David’s Episcopal Day School offers a unique program for children who may not make the Kindergarten cut-off date or who would benefit from an additional year to grow and develop before entering a Kindergarten program. Our “Transitional Kindergarten” (or TK) at St. David’s Episcopal Day School acts as a bridge between Pre-K and Kindergarten and gives learners the valuable time to develop the essential skills and experiences for success in school. In addition to fostering intellectual capabilities, the TK program nurtures social, emotional and physical (gross motor/fine motor) skills through hands-on, play-based learning activities intertwined with thematic units and grounded in Christian values.

TK Program Goals

Class activities in TK are structured with various, flexible grouping to give children the opportunity to interact with each other in a variety of learning environments. The goals for our TK students are:

  • to develop a strong sense of confidence and independence in their own capabilities
  • to allow for maturation and development of skills
  • to gain personal mastery of skills in preparation for Kindergarten.

TK Curriculum Resources

Teachers at St. David’s Episcopal Day School receive specialized training in each of our curriculum’s resources. The TK program places a strong emphasis on phonics, and we have adopted Wilson Fundations® to guide our instruction in language arts, and number sense is gained through Singapore Math®. Children also participate in hands-on science and social studies activities. Our Christian values curriculum encourages character development, helps to promote positive social experiences within our classroom and our school community, and fosters spiritual growth.

Extracurricular Activities

Our TK experience at St. David’s Episcopal Day School is further enhanced with a variety of enriching extracurricular activities which include Spanish, physical education, music, art, library, and nature-based learning. Weekly chapel is led by a Rector from St. David’s Episcopal Church and celebrates all faiths and religions. During the service, children listen to a homily and scripture and participate in prayers and songs. We invite parents to volunteer in our classrooms, and we celebrate our families through fun events like “Guess the Guest.” Children in our TK program also partake in planned field trips which promote experiential learning.
